The Environment SHSM is divided into 5 main categories. Over the Gr 11/12 years, the student must complete all the requirements in all four categories listed.
Environment at Bayridge Secondary School (BSS)
Bayridge Secondary School is very proud of its focus on Environmental issues.
Staff and students have worked together to become a highly respected leader in the field of Environmental studies and initiatives that make a difference locally and globally.
A gold seal Ecoschool for the past ten years, the school boasts environmentally focused programs in Geography and Science, a vital Environmental Club (EcoTeam), and an EcoSchools Canada Team.
Sharing the passion and expertise, Bayridge is hoping to rehost an annual Environmental Summit for all Limestone District students.
Students work with the community and local businesses agencies on studies and projects –both past and present, such as E-waste drives with Scott Environmental and composting/gardening projects.
The Grade 12 Earth and Space Program has been invited to meet Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Art Macdonald at the inaugural ceremony of the Astrophysics Visitor Centre at Queen’s University (the only high school to be 2020-2021 recognized for such an event).
Many Bayridge graduates have gone on into post-secondary education or employment in this area.
With plans to continue to build these programs in the field of environmental science and geography, the SHSM Environmental will tie together all of the components in this area in an enhanced diploma which distinguishes the focus in this area.
Bayridge Secondary presently has several environmentally focused courses in both Geography and Science disciplines, two extracurricular clubs with numerous projects, initiatives and enrichment opportunities in the field (geology excursions, placements in sought-after co-op opportunities) and several stand alone courses in Environmental Studies, Resource Management.
Environmental Stewardship is vital to the school and thus, students will be able to obtain a bundle of credits in the field, complete a practical experience placement, gain valuable certifications, participate in GIS Skills Competitions and take advantage of enriched learning opportunities.
Partnerships with LDSB Sustainable Initiatives, Ecoschools projects, ECO Canada, local environmental corporations and St. Lawrence College ensure the program is relevant to societal needs and appropriate student preparation for the future.

Potential Occupations:
Consolidated as an SHSM Environmental, these students will be well prepared for future endeavours in Environmental studies and employment. Green Industries, including Environmental Management, is one of the fastest growing career opportunities serving today's global needs. Students who have an interest in developing skills leading to employment within the environmental aspects of the Green Industries sector such as landscaping, green space development, composting and renewable resource management will find this a foundational program for future post secondary training and employment. The program is issues based and project driven. Partnerships with LDSB Sustainable Initiatives, Ecoschools projects, ECO Canada, local environmental corporations and St. Lawrence College ensure the program is relevant to societal needs and appropriate student preparation for the future. Potential Green industries courses offer students opportunities to investigate how to care for and sustainably manage our natural and living resources. Students will explore a variety of areas within green industries, including agriculture, floristry, forestry, horticulture, and/or landscaping. Students will gain practical skills and knowledge by completing a variety of authentic, industry-relevant activities and
projects, such as plant propagation and greenhouse maintenance activities; landscape design and planning exercises; assignments that include farm or forestry 2020-2021
Three management plans; and various construction projects (as a partnership with technology and construction in the school). In addition, students will be introduced to concepts pertaining to biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and natural versus
artificial products. Students will also investigate the numerous and varied ways in which green industries and society are interdependent. Green industries courses will prepare students for working safely in the many fields that are encompassed in this
subject area. Students will learn about career opportunities in the green industries and about the Essential Skills and work habits that are important for success in these fields.
Credit Requirements
Students must complete 4 compulsory and 3 elective certifications and/or training courses/programs that are recognized by the environment sector.
