The Building Construction Internship Program, BCIP, offers students authentic site experience in completing a new construction project.

In teaming up with our community partners, BCIP students can work in all the essential construction trades which contribute to the building of a house.

The BCIP is synonymous with the expanded opportunities of the Specialist High Skills Major in construction. Our credit packages allow students to obtain the two construction major credits, the other required credits, and coop credits included in the bundle of ten credits needed to receive the red seal.

Students in BCIP also receive all seven certifications (5 compulsory and 2 elective) required for the construction SHSM.

Potential Occupations:

The BCIP program can help with students from all pathways. Workplace students can earn actual job skills, construction knowledge and safety training employers are looking for. Apprenticeship bound students can gain the necessary knowledge and skills to go on to the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and Phase One of their training. The BCIP is ideal for students who are considering post-secondary studies (college and/or university) in architecture, engineering, and construction management or building inspection.

We have several shops and teachers that accommodate many aspects of construction. For example, Construction, Plumbing, Cabinet Making, Automotive and Technical Design.

We have many students interested in OYAP and we have several full classes in all the courses listed above. FSS also does promote and send students to dual credits being offered at St Lawrence College. At FSS this promotion is in place and students are accustomed to these expanded opportunities at SLC.

Frontenac Secondary School is situated in the west end of Kingston. Within a few kilometers of the school there is a building boom currently happening. A mix of commercial, high density and single-family homes currently underway with long term planning for many more over the coming years. In working with the Kingston Home Builders Association, we have identified many local contractors who are waiting for our grads and are offering coop placements and possible apprenticeships. As with the rest of the province the construction industry in Kingston is in need for more students entering the skilled trades.

The Specialist High Skills Major program in Construction gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Construction industry while still in high school.

Students will acquire career-focused knowledge and skills before entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace.

Students will develop skills, knowledge and experience in Architectural Design, Carpentry, Home Building, and Heating or Electrical areas of the construction sector.

There will be opportunities to connect with industry professionals through field trips, guest speakers and other experiential learning activities.

Students will receive training and sector recognized certifications, such as Working at Heights, basic Health and Safety, First Aid & CPR, lockout/tagout, and confined space awareness as part of the SHSM package.

LCVI is proud to announce it is partnering with the Ontario Masons Training Centre to provide LDSB students a unique opportunity to gain experience in the masonry sector of
construction.

North Addington’s SHSM in Construction is unique to our small setting, but nothing is small about our workshops and graduates.

Our construction and manufacturing courses are the most popular courses at North Addington. Students naturally lean to the SHSM in Construction and have no difficulties finding employment in our local construction
industry.

Over the past few years, our students are signing Registered Trade Agreements before they graduate after completing successful cooperative education placements.

Employers love that students come to them with many industry required certifications,
enriched industry specific experiences, and onsite job training.

The workshops at NAEC are very well equipped to provide students with modern industry specific training. Thanks to a partnership with Stackpole International, NAEC has state-of-the-art manufacturing and construction workshops.

Students regularly get to use one of two C & C machines and are even learning to use computer programs to complement the
technology. Examples of recent projects include building a sugar shack for our school, renovating a garage, and making a sign for a local playground.
